The Challenge

“Early childhood is the most and rapid period of development in a human life.  The years from conception through birth to eight years of age are critical to the complete and healthy cognitive, emotional and physical growth of children.”

Effects of hunger

Pregnancy

When pregnant women do not get proper nutrition during pregnancy their babies have a greater risk of premature birth, low birth weight and smaller brains.

Infancy (1-12 months)

The first three years of a child’s life are a period of rapid brain development. Too little energy, protein and nutrients during this sensitive period can lead to lasting deficits in cognitive, social and emotional development.

Early childhood

Malnourishment causes a condition known as Failure to Thrive. Failure to thrive, affects 5-10 percent of American children under the age of three.

When children do not eat enough protein or eat diets lacking essential minerals and vitamins, brain development is impaired and motor skills are underdeveloped.

Childhood

Hungry children are 7 to 12 times more likely to develop behavior problems such as fighting, oppositional behavior, aggressive behavior, failure to follow the teacher’s instructions, stealing.

Work with us

Help families learn about gardening, nutrition and low cost healthy meals. If you would like to submit an article or video for our website, email your proposal to childproof@drhamiltonstubbs.com

Researchers are finding that gardening as a family helps family bonding, that children exposed to gardening make healthier food choices and children who garden develop a greater appreciation for their environments.
